The American Battle Monuments Commission invites visitors to discover the stories of the U.S. service members who served in Britain during World War II and are commemorated at Cambridge American Cemetery as part of Open Cambridge 2026, taking place Sept. 11-20. The annual event, organized by the University of Cambridge, provides free public access to historic and cultural sites throughout the region and this year focuses on the theme “Everyday Histories.”

As part of the program, Cambridge American Cemetery offers “Stories of the Americans in Britain during World War II,” a series of guided tours that explores the lives and sacrifices of the U.S. men and women who came to Britain to fight for freedom far from home and are now buried or memorialized at the cemetery. Through personal stories shared among the headstones and memorials, visitors gain a deeper understanding of the human experience behind the war and the enduring legacy of those who served.

The tours take place Sept. 12-13 and Sept. 19-20, with three tours offered each day. Participation is free of charge, but advance registration is required. Registration opens Aug. 10, through this link. Each tour is limited to 20 participants.
